Spirits Colliding

Paul Brady

"By this stage the technology of home recording had become much more accessible and I could get a lot of the work done before I even went to the studio. In fact almost everything on this record was started at home. 'Love Made a Promise', 'The World Is What You Make It' and 'Marriage Made In Hollywood' were almost entirely made at home. I still remember Mark Nevin who wrote 'Love Made A Promise' with me thrashing the tortured guitar at the end while he was dying with the flu yet laughing his head off .'Beautiful World' was recorded one evening after a particularly pleasant dinner. I just wandered into my studio on my own and sat down and sang it with no intention of it being 'for real'. 'The World Is What You Make It' was also begun as a demo. I tried to record it for real later and it just never sounded as cool. So I used the original and am so glad I did. It's one of my favourite things I've put on record. Eventually I knew that to finish the record I needed to go to a 'proper' studio So I went to Sulan studios in County Cork with Shea Fitzgerald and then Bow Lane in Dublin and that's where everything was finished off. I formed a great relationship with Shea and I really couldn't have done it without him. But the real big event in this recording was when Bela Fleck and the Wooten Brothers arrived. They had been touring in Europe and they came over to play on the record. I always loved what they did and I'd been at a few sessions with them in Nashville so I was fairly confident they would fit in. I am proud of this record because I think I got closer than on any other record to expressing my own natural rhythmic feel. And it was a lot of fun making it. People say it's my best sounding record. Mick Glossop, who mixed it, take a bow!" ~ Paul Brady
